Frequently Asked Questions about Confirmation:
1. Are there any costs associated with this preparation program? If so, why?
Yes, there is a $100 registration fee to cover textbook and preparation material expenses, plus $25 for gown rental. Payments are made upon registration online.
2. Who is a Confirmation sponsor?
A Confirmation sponsor is a model of faith for the candidate, encouraging and assisting them in embracing the Catholic faith before and after Confirmation. They present the candidate to the bishop at the celebration of Confirmation. The candidate or parent shall choose a sponsor who is a confirmed Catholic in good standing under Church laws, and at least 16 years old.
3. What is the Confirmation Enrolment Ceremony?
The Confirmation Ceremony is designed for candidates to publicly state their intention to enrol in the preparation program. The candidate will bring a handwritten Letter of Intent expressing their readiness to attend Sunday Mass and active participation in the preparation program. The ceremony will be held during the weekend Masses on October 25th and 26th. Each candidate will receive a cross as a symbol of their commitment.
4. Why is the Confirmation Retreat important?
The Confirmation Retreat is important because it helps candidates prepare spiritually for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Candidates will attend the retreat with their parents in the morning, and sponsors may join in the afternoon. Everyone can participate in confession. It is an opportunity for reflection and growth as candidates get ready for the sacrament.
5. I was baptized in an Eastern Rite Church, so I was confirmed at the same time. Can I be confirmed again?
Confirmation can be celebrated only once. However, Grade 7 students who are already confirmed are welcome to participate in the parish preparation program to deepen their understanding of their faith. They will receive a blessing during the Confirmation mass.
6. Why must I participate in a parish-based program when I am attending a Catholic school?
Children of the Catholic faith must receive sacraments in the parish where their families attend Sunday mass. Parents and the parish are responsible for preparing for sacramental celebrations.
7. Why are parents involved in the process?
As St. Augustine famously stated, parents are not only responsible for bringing children into the world but also guiding them towards God. The Church actively involves parents in the faith of their families from the outset, recognizing that parents are the primary educators of their children. Furthermore, parents "are bound by the most serious obligation to educate their offspring". Consequently, the Church refers to the Christian family as the “ domestic church" (CCC: 1655-1658).
8. Why is a certificate of First Holy Communion required for Confirmation?
An authenticated First Holy Communion certificate must be submitted to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. It assures the candidate and sponsor have valid baptism.
9. Why does the parish need the address of the church where I was baptized?
The parish needs the address of the church where you were baptized to update their records and send a Confirmation notice to that church. This is necessary for both our parish records and the church where you were baptized to properly record your Confirmation.
10. What happens if I miss classes?
In the event of an absence due to illness or a significant conflict, it is imperative to notify the sacramental preparation coordinator. This will facilitate the scheduling of a make-up session. Absences without valid reasons may result in withdrawal from the program, and the individual will have the opportunity to rejoin at a later date.
11. What do I do if I decide (during or after the preparation) not to be confirmed?
You need to contact the sacramental preparation coordinator if you decide this is not the time for you to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. We will respect your decision and encourage you to consider to be confirmed when the time is right for you.
12. Why do we have to use a Sacrificial Offering envelope?
The Sacrificial Offering is a sign of the candidate’s commitment to the preparation program by making one small sacrifice weekly. The donations collected will support charitable causes.
