FAQ Confirmation:
1. Is there a cost associated with this preparation program and why?
Yes, there is a fee of $50 to cover the costs of books and other preparation materials, plus $25 for the rental of the Confirmation gown. Payments are to be made on the Parent Information Night.
2. What is a Confirmation sponsor?
A Confirmation sponsor is a model of faith for the candidate, one who encourages and assists the candidate to embrace the Catholic faith, both before and after Confirmation. The sponsor also presents the candidate to the Bishop at the celebration of Confirmation. The candidate or parent must choose a sponsor who is a confirmed Catholic in good standing under church laws, and at least 16 years of age.
3. I was baptized in an Eastern Rite Church, so I was confirmed at the same time. Can I be confirmed again?
Confirmation can be celebrated only once. However, Grade 7 students who are already confirmed are welcome to participate in the preparation program in the parish to deepen their understanding of their faith. During the Confirmation mass, they will be called forward to receive a blessing.
4. What do I do if I decide (during or after the preparation) not to be confirmed?
You have to contact the sacramental preparation coordinator if you decide this is not the time for you to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. We will respect your decision and encourage you to consider being confirmed when the time is right for you.
5. Why does the parish need the address of the church where I was baptized?
The parish needs the address of the church where you were baptized to update their records and send a Confirmation notice to that church. This is necessary for both our parish records and the church where you were baptized to properly record your Confirmation.
6. Why must I take part in a parish-based program when I am attending a Catholic School?
Children of the Catholic faith is required to receive the sacraments in the parish where the family attends Sunday mass. The immediate preparation for the celebration of the sacraments is the responsibility of both the parents and the parish.
7. Why are parents involved in this process?
As St. Augustine once said, parents are called "not only to bring children into the world but also to bring them to God".[3] The Church involves parents in the faith of their family from the start because parents are called to be "the first preachers of the faith" to their children. [1] The parents "are bound by the most serious obligation to educate their off-spring". [2] For this reason the Church calls the Christian family, "the domestic church" (CCC: 1655-1658).
8. Why must I submit a Baptism certificate for any of the sacraments?
As Baptism is the gateway to all other sacraments of the Catholic Church, the parish needs to make sure the candidate/sponsor is validly baptized.
9. What happens if I miss one of my preparation classes?
Missing a preparation class means you must notify the sacramental preparation coordinator if you're sick or have a serious conflict to arrange a make-up session. Without a valid reason for missing, you may have to withdraw from the program and rejoin later.
